Assignment WK07: The Census API

  1. Get a Census API Key: Use your name and email address in this form.

  2. Install the tidycensus package. Read at least about basic usage of tidycensus,though you should also look at Spatial Data in Tidycensus and Margins of Error in the ACS, and Other Census Bureau Datasets. Additional detail can be found in Kyle Walker Analyzing US Census Data: Methods, Maps, and Models in R (CRC Press, 2023), https://walker-data.com/census-r/.

  3. Work through some examples of getting and graphing data from the Census in the “Basic Usage” and “Spatial Data” sections of the tidycensus documentation. Find something interesting about the U.S. as a whole, or about counties within a state of your choice. Bring the results to class.
